The Legends of Hollywood are dwindling. Gloria Stuart, leading lady in the 1930's and the Titanic heroine, just passed away on September 26th. Today, we are told of the death of screen legend Tony Curtis. It seems that all we Classic Film Fans hold near and dear are leaving this planet.
I found Tony Curtis to be a true Hollywood Personality. He truly reveled in being an actor and being a star. Curtis had great charisma onscreen. To this day, I would have to pick Houdini as my favorite Tony Curtis movie. Yes, he is awesome in Some Like It Hot and riveting in The Defiant Ones. However, I have always felt he owned Houdini -- that was truly HIS film. It showed his ability to carry a movie and make the most of an average script. To me, that is the sign of a true star.
I liked Tony Curtis offscreen too. He was always willing to do interviews and share his experiences. Curtis was a joy to watch being interviewed. He had so much gusto and truly drew you into his stories. I also liked that Curtis did not take himself too seriously. Curtis knew he was a very talented performer, so he could laugh at himself and did not take some good humored ribbing personally.
Tony Curtis was a truly unique person. He was a very talented and well rounded actor. In addition, he was a link to Hollywood's Golden Age and always willing to give us a glimpse into that era. He will be sorely missed.

Gilby, Houdini is one of my Tony Curtis favorites too. I also thought his talent was wonderfully showcased in The Boston Strangler, certainly a different type of part for him. It is hard to see them go. But you know most of the movie actors I loved were either dead or on their way out by the time I was a kid and started loving them. As long as film stock holds out, they'll always be around.
Gilby, I will always remember his many wonderful performances that I have seen.
