TCM Alert for fans of The Saint!

TCM has a second marathon today. Starting at 10 am, TCM will show all The Saint films made at RKO from 1938 - 1943. The first film, The Saint in New York, starred Louis Hayward as Simon Templar aka The Saint. Hayward is very good as the title character. He did have the right charm to play Templar, a man who walks a fine line between being a charming criminal himself and assisting authorities in catching other criminals.

The next five films were: The Saint Strikes Back, The Saint in London, The Saint's Double Trouble, The Saint Takes Over, and The Saint in Palm Springs. These movies starred George Sanders. To me, Sanders was a great choice. He was very charismatic and played morally ambiguous characters well. The Saint was a crime fighter, but he followed his own code of behavior for accomplishing a task. After all, Templar was a former jewel thief.

The last two films in the series were: The Saint's Vacation and The Saint Meets the Tiger. These two movies starred Hugh Sinclair as Simon Templar. I have not seen either of these installements in the series, so I can not comment on Sinclair's performance. However, I have set my  DVR -- so I can watch these two films and see how Sinclair compares to Hayward and Sanders.

I am thrilled to see TCM do marathons of movie series. These series are often not available on DVD and are great viewing for the classic movie fan. I would love to see a Falcon marathon on TCM soon! After all, how many times do we really need to see Bye, Bye Birdie!?

Gilby, I LOVE The Saint. I watched most of them, and always do when they are on. George Sanders is the best Saint, hands down! Nobody can sneer and be so charming like George. And that voice -- sigh. I bet he was a handful in real life, but I would have taken the challenge! And, I totally agree with you about ENOUGH Bye, Bye Birdie!

For me it has to be George Sanders .
NO ONE could play the cynical , yet charming man of mystery any better then Mr. Sanders .

Like so many of these movie series , the Saint films are briskly paced and production values , while not those of a featured " A " film , are for the most part excellent . Well worth rediscovering and for those seeing them for the first time a whole lot of BANG for the buck !

Thanks honey for another incisive and enjoyable article !
